Tool’s Maynard James Keenan Says “We’ve Lost The Way” Amid Growing Frustration With Modern Society

Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan has continued to voice his concerns about the current state of society, pointing to a growing disconnect between people in the modern era.

The outspoken musician — also known for his work with A Perfect Circle and Puscifer — has increasingly woven those concerns into his creative output. His latest release with Puscifer, ‘Normal Isn’t’, reflects what he sees as a breakdown of any shared sense of normalcy.

In a recent interview with Louder, Keenan didn’t hold back when describing his outlook:

“I don’t know if you noticed, but the fcking world’s on fire and I don’t think there’s enough buckets around to help put it out. There’s a lot of people that don’t seem interested or even notice that it’s on fire. We’ve lost the fcking way. I think the ability to talk to each other is vanquished. It’s been unplugged. Frustrating times.”

Keenan’s concerns echo sentiments shared by Randy Blythe of Lamb Of God, who has also spoken about the erosion of community in an increasingly digital world. Reflecting on that shift, Blythe recently explained:

“Most people are more isolated than ever. How many people know their neighbours? I know mine. Several of them have the key to my house. They can come and go when they please… Why? Because we are building community.”
