Metallica are stepping into the world of immersive technology with their newly announced VR concert film, set to debut exclusively on Apple Vision Pro headsets this Friday, March 14th. The legendary metal outfit unveiled the project today, March 11th, at the South By Southwest Conference, with Lars Ulrich joining Zane Lowe to break the news.
Titled simply Metallica, the Apple Immersive concert experience captures performances of “Whiplash,” “One,” and “Enter Sandman” from the band’s final ‘M72’ tour stop in Mexico City in 2024. Utilizing ultra-high-resolution 180-degree video and Spatial Audio, the film offers fans a unique, close-up perspective from locations like the Snake Pit and sweeping wide-angle views.
To bring this next-level concert experience to life, Apple developed a custom stage plot, featuring 14 Apple Immersive Video cameras, a mix of stabilized, cable-suspended, and remote-controlled dolly systems, ensuring dynamic, cinematic angles throughout the set.
In addition to the VR film, the songs from Metallica will also be available as a new EP, Metallica Live from Mexico City, in Spatial Audio via Apple Music on March 14th.
For those interested in a preview, an extended cut of Metallica will be showcased in Apple Stores worldwide starting March 14th, with customers in select countries able to schedule a free Apple Vision Pro demo to experience it firsthand.
