Drumeo just dropped a surprise Father’s Day-themed challenge — and it’s a heavy one. In their latest video, legendary drummer Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater, The Winery Dogs, Avenged Sevenfold) puts his son, Max Portnoy, to the test by challenging him to learn Dream Theater’s intense 2003 track “Honor Thy Father” on the spot.
The performance is more than just a nod to prog metal’s intricate legacy — it’s a clever, full-circle moment between a father and son sharing the same rhythm-driven passion. While Max originally made a name for himself as the drummer for nü-core act Tallah, he’s since pivoted to handling bass duties in more recent projects. But with bloodlines like his, he wasn’t going to walk away from a kit for long.
Released just ahead of Father’s Day (this Sunday, June 15th), the video is both a heartwarming and punishingly technical tribute. The choice of song is no accident either — “Honor Thy Father”, taken from Dream Theater’s 2003 album Train of Thought, was penned by Mike during a particularly raw period in his personal life.
Watch the full video now via Drumeo’s official channel and see whether Max Portnoy can live up to the family name — or even exceed it.
