Blackened deathcore outfit Ov Sulfur have put their own spin on a Slayer classic, releasing a new cover of “Disciple” in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the thrash metal legends’ ninth studio album, ‘God Hates Us All’.
Originally released on September 11, 2001, ‘God Hates Us All’ remains one of Slayer’s most aggressive and divisive records. For Ov Sulfur, the anniversary provided an opportunity to revisit one of their favorite tracks from the album.
Guitarist Chase Wilson commented:
“‘God Hates Us All’ has always been one of my favourite Slayer records. I’m stoked we got to put our spin on one of the sickest songs on it!”
Vocalist Ricky Hoover was particularly interested in taking on Tom Araya’s distinctive vocal approach.
“I was excited when the guys decided to do a Slayer cover, as it allowed me to see if I could hit Tom Araya style vocals. He’s a unique, stand-out voice in metal, and it was fun to see if I could add his signature melodic shouting to my repertoire.”
Ov Sulfur will take their take on Slayer overseas later this year, with the band set to serve as direct support for Mental Cruelty on their upcoming European/UK run. Extermination Dismemberment will also appear across the trek, with Sun Eater and Arcanius joining on select dates.
