The 1994 film ‘The Crow‘ is a bonified cult-classic for everyone who grew up in the 1990s wearing all black and into all things dark and morbid. For those unfamiliar, the film is a supernatural-thriller based on the comic book by James O’Barr, which tells the story of Eric Draven, a musician who is brutally murdered alongside his fiancée Shelly, only to be resurrected by a mystical crow one year later. Seeking vengeance on those responsible for their deaths, Eric embarks on a journey through a crime-ridden and decaying city, confronting both inner demons and external foes.
A big part of the film’s allure lies not only in its tragic production, which saw the untimely death of lead actor Brandon Lee, but also in its iconic soundtrack, which remains a cornerstone of ’90s culture (and can be found below). Featuring tracks from legendary bands like The Cure, Nine Inch Nails, and My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult, the soundtrack of ‘The Crow‘ perfectly complements the film’s mood and aesthetic, immersing viewers in its haunting world.
In 2024, Lionsgate endeavors to revive the franchise, casting Bill Skarsgård and FKA Twigs as Draven and Shelly, respectively. Despite some fans’ superstitions about the franchise being “cursed” and arguments that Brandon Lee‘s portrayal of Eric Draven should remain untouched, the remake moves forward. Whether the film will meet expectations, attract a broader audience, or take the franchise to new heights remains uncertain until its release on August 23rd. The trailers for both
However, one thing is apparent: the film’s soundtrack will likely fall short of its predecessor. It’s uncertain whether an original soundtrack loaded with fitting songs from up-and-coming or modern bands will even exist this time around with the franchise, so we have assembled an almost two-hour, 27-track playlist that could serve as a modern incarnation of the film’s soundtrack in case such a thing is non-existent.
