Fast-rising masked showrunner rock outfit PRESIDENT have made plenty of noise in a short amount of time — and not all of it has been celebratory. While the band’s rapid ascent has earned them a growing audience, it has also sparked skepticism, with critics questioning both their origins and their sudden high-profile exposure.
Those conversations intensified after PRESIDENT made their live debut at Download Festival 2025, a move that raised eyebrows given the band’s relative newness at the time. Some detractors pointed to the group’s placement alongside Sleep Token, who headlined the same day, fueling accusations that PRESIDENT were fast-tracked rather than organically earned their slot.
Additional scrutiny has followed due to shared management ties with Sleep Token under Future History Management, as well as PRESIDENT’s masked aesthetic and thematic presentation — elements that have led many to label the band as a derivative project or industry-backed cash-in.
It’s a narrative the band’s anonymous frontman appears to have little patience for.
In a recent interview with Metal Hammer, PRESIDENT’s vocalist addressed the constant comparisons head-on, dismissing them outright:
“What a f*cking lazy comparison. I mean, yes, we have the same management, and we both wear masks. Those are both facts… you got me! It’s like, is that it?! That’s all you’ve got? It’s hardly a new thing, is it, wearing masks?!”
While debates around PRESIDENT’s legitimacy are unlikely to disappear anytime soon, the band have made it clear they’re not interested in being defined by another act’s success. As their momentum continues to build, it seems PRESIDENT are intent on carving out their own identity — comparisons be damned.

President is a band where the lead singer has always wanted to be in an annonymous band, just happens he had a lot of success with other bands before commiting to it.
Sleep token have been around for years, they have only become majorly popular within the last year or so. Vocalist was in a band before sleep token that wasnt very popular amd the drummer was in a death metal band prior. Hardly industry plants
