Red Hot Chili Peppers Clarify Role In Netflix Documentary: “This Is Not A Red Hot Chili Peppers Documentary”

A new Netflix documentary centered on the formative years of Red Hot Chili Peppers is set to premiere on March 20, though the band has now publicly clarified their limited role in the project.

The documentary, titled ‘The Rise Of The Red Hot Chili Peppers’, was directed by Ben Feldman (‘Bug Out’, ‘Rich & Shameless’) and focuses on the group’s early history, with particular attention paid to founding guitarist Hillel Slovak, who died in 1988 following an accidental heroin overdose at the age of 26.

While members of the band do appear in interview footage, Red Hot Chili Peppers have stressed that the project was not created with their direct involvement. In a joint statement shared via social media on January 30, the multi-platinum funk rock outfit explained that they participated solely out of respect for Slovak’s legacy.

“About a year ago, we were asked to be interviewed for a documentary about Hillel Slovak. He was a founding member of the group, a great guitarist, and friend. We agreed to be interviewed out of love and respect for Hillel and his memory.

However, this documentary is now being advertised as a Red Hot Chili Peppers documentary, which it is not. We had nothing to do with it creatively. We have yet to make a Red Hot Chili Peppers documentary. The central subject of this current Netflix special is Hillel Slovak and we hope it sparks interest in him and his work.”

Slovak played a pivotal role in shaping the band’s early sound and famously encouraged Flea to take up the bass, helping lay the foundation for what would become one of the most influential alternative rock acts of all time. His death marked a turning point in the group’s history and deeply impacted the band’s future direction.

Despite the band’s clarification, the documentary has already generated industry interest. The film reportedly received a private screening at the Cannes Film Festival last year while seeking distribution, eventually landing at Netflix. Director Ben Feldman previously described the project as a story rooted in friendship and formative bonds, emphasizing both its emotional core and its larger cultural impact.

Netflix has not commented on the band’s statement, but ‘The Rise Of The Red Hot Chili Peppers’ remains scheduled for release later this spring.
