Shadows Fall have officially completed work on their long-awaited comeback album, according to guitarist Jonathan Donais.
The upcoming release will mark the Springfield, Massachusetts metalcore band’s first full-length studio album since 2012 and their eighth overall. The group has been working on the record with acclaimed producer Zeuss, whose résumé includes projects with Rob Zombie and Hatebreed.
Speaking with Mike Z, Donais confirmed that the album is finished and that the band is now focused on planning its release.
“[The new album is] done, but [we’ve] just gotta go through everything and figure out the right times and people’s schedules and stuff [before we release it].”
Donais also offered insight into the creative approach behind the album, revealing that he intentionally revisited the music that inspired him to form Shadows Fall in the first place.
“When I was writing it, I tried to only get influenced by the bands that I was listening to when I started Shadows Fall.”
According to Donais, that meant diving back into a steady diet of thrash metal and 1990s death metal, allowing him to reconnect with the mindset that fueled the band’s earliest material.
“I listened to a lot of thrash, a lot of ’90s death metal, and I was just trying to get that vibe again when I was 17. Like, why did I wanna start Shadows Fall?”
He added that revisiting those influences with a fresh perspective reignited his enthusiasm for the project.
“I was listening to these bands with a new perspective. I was, like, ‘Wow, shit, this stuff’s still really cool.’ And then I was just excited, because we hadn’t done anything in a while, so it was exciting again.”
Since reuniting in 2021, Shadows Fall have released two new songs, “In The Grey” and “Souls Devoured,” offering fans an early taste of the band’s return.
While an official release date has yet to be announced, the completion of the album signals that new music from one of metalcore’s most influential acts is finally on the horizon.
