If you’ve ever wondered why Chino Moreno (Deftones) was pictured holding a shovel in the liner notes for Soulfly’s gold-certified 1997 debut, Max Cavalera has finally shed some light on the mystery. Recorded with producer Ross Robinson (Slipknot, Korn) at the legendary Indigo Ranch Studios in Malibu, CA, the album was born in one of nü-metal’s most sacred spaces — a studio that hosted sessions for genre-defining acts like Korn, Slipknot, Machine Head, and Limp Bizkit before tragically burning down in 2007.
In a new interview with Alternative Nation, Cavalera revealed that he and Moreno actually buried the master tapes overnight on the property to imbue them with what he called “Indigenous power.” Drawing on the tribal themes that defined his work in Sepultura and continued through Soulfly, Cavalera said the gesture was symbolic — an attempt to spiritually charge the music through the energy of the land itself.
“We buried [the recordings] in Indigo Ranch,” Cavalera recalled. “We knew there was a burial ground there — like an Indian burial ground from 300 years ago. So, I wanted to capture the essence of the land, of the Indigenous power. So, me and Chino from the Deftones, we dig big holes, we put the tapes there. We closed it, let it spend the night. The next day, dug them up. It was cool. It was kind of crazy, but fun at the same time.”
That story also explains why Moreno appears in the album’s artwork holding a shovel. Cavalera said:
“People are like, ‘Why is he holding a shovel in a picture?’ That’s why, because we’re digging holes in Indigo Ranch, in the Malibu hills.”
When asked why they did it, Cavalera admitted there wasn’t a deeper reason beyond instinct and energy. He added:
“There’s not really an explanation for it, just fun and the madness of metal.”
Moreno didn’t just lend a hand in the burial, either — he also appeared on “First Commandment,” the sixth track from Soulfly. The collaboration stemmed from Moreno’s friendship with Cavalera’s late stepson Dana Wells, to whom both the song and the entire album were dedicated following his tragic death in 1996.

He plays fine, just watched him and Igor play chaos A.D.
Jeff Ar yeah, the guy who wrote roots, bloody roots sure is a stinky stinker. Sure wasn’t pivotal to several genres foundations. Yeah, you right
Jeff Ar he never claimed to be a virtuoso. He actually is a pretty humble guy, kinda mokes himself saying he just needs 4 strings and his thing is to create cool riffs. He plays alright and he knows himself he is limited. He is a cool dude, brother. And you can be a better person too.
Jeff Ar Max is just doing his thing gloria is an asshole tho. She runs the soulfly fan page like a nazi calls everyone racist and shit that doesn’t agree with her.
Jeff Ar bro, you watch wrestling, and you’re literally critiquing gimmicks? You’re a fuckin idiot lol
I could feel it.
🤎🪶
What??? 😂😂😂
Max Calavera looks pure European lol why does he pretend to be indigenous?
He was born and raised in Brazil
So what? I was born and raised in USA… doesn’t mean I’m Native American. Brazil was colonized by the Portuguese. He looks like them. Nothing like the Amazon tribesman on the cover of the album.
Casey Brooks Someone doesn’t know about colonization
Yeah, and it’s obviously Max Calavara
Casey Brooks So it’s his fault his people were colonized? People that were colonized should keep being indoctrinated instead of praising their roots before said colonization? Just wow.
His people were not colonized because he is not native… does he look native to you? He is of European decent. His people WERE the colonizers.
A dog must’ve shit on them
Earth magic
wow all that and they still suck
Davey Von Barenjager and you’re that much better of a human?
Brandon Manseill why yes I am thank you
Davey Von Barenjager naw… That first soulfly record is amazing… Everything after was poo poo

Max and Chino on “First Commandment” is one of the most pure expression’s of grief and frustration in all of metal history!! Much respect to both artists for wearing their hearts on their sleeves and revealing their souls to the masses!!
They were probably also on drugs at the time
