British post-hardcore/screamo outfit Static Dress have unveiled a new track, “Nostalgia Kills,” featuring members of gold-certified metalcore icons Underoath. The accompanying music video includes Underoath vocalist Spencer Chamberlain and drummer/vocalist Aaron Gillespie, and was co-directed by Zak Pinchin (Split Chain, Love Is Noise) alongside Static Dress frontman Oli Appleyard.
Appleyard spoke about the collaboration:
“‘Nostalgia Kills‘ has allowed us to demonstrate the elevation of this band between all four members. It’s shown not only how much we’ve all grown as musicians individually, but together, to create something which is sonically stronger than we’ve ever been. Also, having the opportunity to have a band like Underoath on it feels like a stamp of approval from real legends of the post-hardcore genre.”
The track is set to appear on Static Dress’ forthcoming sophomore album, Injury Episode, due May 29th via Sumerian Records. In their first interview about the record with Kerrang!, Appleyard explained the album’s approach and conceptual depth:
“The thing that I really want people to understand with this record is there’s no cheap thrills, there’s no easy wins. I’ve compared the first record to being like a mini dirt bike. It’s fun, but you’re not going to drive it to work. I compare this one to a classic car, where some people look at it and just go, ‘Yeah, cool, it’s a car,’ but some people look at that and go, ‘That is the best thing ever.’”
Appleyard also discussed how one-take sessions shaped the album, which was produced by Loathe’s Erik Bickerstaffe, and how it explores a narrative arc between two characters previously seen in the videos for “Human Props” and now “Nostalgia Kills.”
The vocalist didn’t hold back on his thoughts about the modern music industry:
“People are making songs rather than creating music. The most fun part about music is performing. I feel like that’s completely missing from a lot of guitar music nowadays, because everyone’s like, ‘I’m just gonna write a hit for radio or TikTok.’ I feel like you can just fully tell – everyone’s song sounds the same, everyone goes to the same producers, so what comes out of it is the same, regurgitated ideas. I’m like, ‘This is so ass, because no-one has any individual ideas anymore.’”
Looking ahead, Static Dress will hit the U.S. this mid-July as part of ‘The Sweat And Blood Tour,’ opening for Motionless In White, Lorna Shore, and Fit For A King.
