Pro-Shot Footage of SYSTEM OF A DOWN’s 2002 ‘Pinkpop’ Festival Performance Released

Professionally-filmed footage of System Of A Down’s May 20th, 2002 set at the annual Pinkpop festival in Landgraaf, Netherlands, has been unearthed from the event’s archives. While the band played roughly 22 songs during the show, this broadcast features 14 of them.

The performance wasn’t without its hiccups—early technical issues with Daron Malakian’s guitar left him sidelined for a couple of songs. In true unpredictable fashion, Malakian used the downtime to go crowdsurfing, try some breakdancing, and even take a quick nap on stage while his tech worked on the problem. Revisiting the footage on August 7th, he shared on social media:

“That time when my guitar rig stopped working and I decided to take a little nap on stage in front of thousands of people at the Pinkpop festival. While my tech was trying to fix the problem and the band kept playing through two songs without me, I closed my eyes and dreamt that my guitars would start working again. Sometimes all you can do is dream.”

At the time, the Armenian-American nü-metal giants were riding the wave of massive commercial success—Toxicity had been certified 2x platinum just a month earlier.
