While it wasn’t always a guarantee, TOOL are now officially set to perform at tomorrow’s ‘Back To The Beginning’ farewell celebration for BLACK SABBATH and OZZY OSBOURNE. The event takes place July 5th at Villa Park in Birmingham, UK, and marks a monumental sendoff featuring a staggering lineup of rock and metal giants.
TOOL’s eventual involvement stems in part from guitarist Adam Jones’ longtime friendship with Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine), who is overseeing an all-star tribute jam during the event. Initially, Jones was only scheduled to appear alongside Morello and Billy Corgan (The Smashing Pumpkins) for a Sabbath cover—but things quickly changed once the rest of TOOL signed on.
In a new feature with Guitar World, Jones explained how things evolved:
“I can’t tell you how much I’m looking forward to it. I pinch myself every day. You go, ‘When I was 16, did you ever think you’d meet these guys? Did you ever think you’d open for these guys?… Did you ever think you’d have four Grammys?’ My life’s good, man. It’s good, and on that day, it’ll be even better.”
As for how the full band ended up committing, Jones shared:
“It came through Tom Morello… We were texting and someone said, ‘I don’t think I can do it.’ Someone else said, ‘I think I’m gonna do this other thing.’ I even said, ‘Yeah, let’s not do it.’ But it was really an honor that they asked us.”
Eventually, pieces started falling into place behind the scenes:
“I was again talking to Tom, and I went, ‘Yeah, I’m sorry we all couldn’t do it.’ He goes, ‘Well, you know Dan [Carey] is playing with these guys, and Maynard is playing with these people…’ I went, ‘I didn’t know that…’ It hit me. I went back to our people and said, ‘Why don’t we just do it? We’re all going to be there.’ That’s how it happened – and why it was announced later.”
Jones also spoke at length about his admiration for BLACK SABBATH, calling them a major influence:
“I always wanted to do a compilation of music that scared the shit out of me… Black Sabbath was like that for me. I loved horror movies, and [Sabbath] had the same temperature. There’s just something romantic about it… I still put that music on today, and I get the same thing I was getting when I first heard it.”
On Tony Iommi’s influence on his playing:
“It’s why I’m obsessed with drop D… The stuff he did – the tone, the playing the notes and pulling off to the open D – it was just haunting, and the riffs were so good. I could play them, but there’s a vibe, and it’s wonderful. And if you don’t hear it in TOOL, you probably aren’t really into Black Sabbath.”

The event will be livestreamed worldwide tomorrow via backtothebeginning.com. A portion of the proceeds will go to Cure Parkinson’s, Birmingham Children’s Hospital, and Acorn Children’s Hospice.
