Tool fans may have received their biggest hint yet that the band could be preparing to enter the studio, thanks to new comments regarding drummer Danny Carey’s upcoming commitments.
While the progressive alternative metal icons have discussed the possibility of new material for years, anticipation has continued to build as the band approaches the seventh anniversary of their acclaimed 2019 album ‘Fear Inoculum’.
Earlier this year, Carey revealed that he hoped Tool could release a new album in 2027, and a recent update from one of his musical collaborators appears to suggest that timeline could be moving closer to reality.
Carey has been a recurring member of BEAT, the all-star tribute project celebrating the music of King Crimson. However, when BEAT recently announced their upcoming fall tour, drummer Terry Bozzio was revealed as Carey’s replacement behind the kit.
BEAT bassist/vocalist Tony Levin explained Carey’s absence in a new statement:
“As Adrian Belew, Steve Vai and Tony Levin approach the band’s upcoming activity, Terry Bozzio enters the fold behind the kit. Danny Carey remains an important part of the BEAT family, and simply his Tool commitments prevent him from being available for this upcoming run in the Fall.”
At this time, Tool have no announced live dates, leaving fans to speculate that Carey’s scheduling conflict may be connected to studio work rather than touring plans.
The possibility of new Tool material has been discussed previously, with bassist Justin Chancellor confirming last summer that the band had begun working on new music. However, Chancellor also noted that the group’s creative process moves on its own timeline, famously stating that “art doesn’t really have a schedule.”
With a potential 2027 album release already being discussed, alongside previous rumors of a possible Sphere residency, the coming year could become a major period for Tool fans if new music officially enters the picture.
