Whitechapel have brought another chapter of their ‘Hymns In Dissonance’ album to life with the release of a new music video for “Bedlam.” The NSFW clip leans heavily into graphic horror imagery, continuing the unsettling themes explored throughout the Knoxville, Tennessee deathcore band’s latest record.
Vocalist Phil Bozeman offered some background on the song’s narrative, connecting its disturbing storyline to a character introduced on the band’s 2008 album ‘This Is Exile’:
“In the album ‘This Is Exile’, there was a character ‘Daemon’ [AKA Craig] who is the brother of the cult leader. This song is him admitting his jealousy towards him and defiling his rotting corpse. This is the point of view of him and his dead brother, who is eternally trapped in his own dead body and can still feel and hear everything but cannot move or escape.
Craig is basically slowly defiling his body because of his envy towards his older brother being the one who was chosen instead of him to be the seed of evil. ‘Bedlam’ is chaos, confusion, and turmoil which describes this scene.”
The accompanying video was directed by David Brodsky, whose previous work includes clips for Cattle Decapitation and Revocation. Brodsky has once again teamed up with Whitechapel to deliver a visual that matches the song’s gruesome subject matter.
Whitechapel are also preparing to hit the road for their 20th anniversary tour, which gets underway November 11. The band will be joined by Chelsea Grin, The Acacia Strain and Netherwalker on the trek, with Carcosa appearing on the two Canadian dates in Montreal and Toronto in place of Netherwalker.
