Zao Announce New Covers EP ‘Pillars’, Tease More Projects Ahead

Zao have officially announced a new covers EP titled ‘Pillars’, which is set for a June 26 digital release.

The veteran metalcore outfit recently ran into an unexpected hiccup involving an AI-related issue with a digital distributor, but with that situation now resolved, the band have begun rolling out details for the project.

In a statement shared on April 30, the band confirmed the scope of the release and what fans can expect:

“Now that the chaos is over. We can now safely tell you that June 26th will see the release of a 4-song EP called Pillars. It will be digital. There will be a 10” vinyl (you know how vinyl goes, may not be ready to go by 26th but you will have pre-order options).”

“Zao performing songs that inspired us in the mid 90s from the rust belt of western PA: Creation Is Crucifixion, Passover, Puritan and Abnegation.”

“We have a few other ‘covers’ projects rolling out this year while we are working on the next album(s?) You have been warned.”

The EP will see Zao paying tribute to bands that helped shape their sound during the mid-’90s, particularly from the Western Pennsylvania scene.

One notable inclusion ties directly to the band’s current lineup, as guitarist/vocalist Scott Mellinger previously played in Creation Is Crucifixion. A recent studio clip from the band suggests they’ll be covering “The Data Body” as part of the release.

Beyond ‘Pillars’, it sounds like Zao have even more in the pipeline, with additional covers projects teased alongside work on their next full-length release.
