Korn bassist Fieldy has shed new light on why he stepped away from the band in 2021, revealing that the COVID-19 pandemic played a central role in his decision to step back.
When Fieldy first announced his hiatus, many fans assumed it would be temporary. At the time, he cited personal struggles and “bad habits,” while emphasizing his love for bandmates Jonathan Davis, James “Munky” Shaffer, Brian “Head” Welch, and Ray Luzier.
Since then, Roberto Ra Díaz has continued performing live with Korn in Fieldy’s place, while the bassist remained largely absent from the public eye.
Now, during a newly surfaced interview recorded late last year for the Shady Characters podcast alongside former L.A.P.D. bandmate Richard Morrill, Fieldy directly addressed what led to his exit.
“COVID happened. That’s it. I’m like, ‘I’m not going out there.’ That’s what happened, ’cause it was new.”
He continued by explaining that touring plans during the pandemic created tension around returning to the road.
“They’re like, ‘We’re going to Florida and all this.’ And I’m like, ‘I’m not going to get vaccinated.’ I’m not going. I go, ‘People, this is weird right now.’”
Fieldy said the time away also gave him room to reflect on nearly three decades with Korn and what came next.
“Almost 30 years with Korn, that was a blast, man… I don’t look back going, ‘That sucked.’”
When asked whether he now considers himself retired from the band, he offered a measured response:
“I’m retired from Korn today, but we’ll see what the day brings tomorrow.”
Looking Ahead
While his future with Korn remains uncertain, Fieldy confirmed he has been working on new material with other musicians, including Greyson Nekrutman of Sepultura.
For now, it appears the longtime Korn bassist is at peace with where things stand, while leaving the door cracked open for whatever may come next.

Jonathan Stauffer He’s an alcoholic and a pothead. He’s not really into hard drugs at all. His main love is drinking beer. He was never into meth like the other guys were.
Jonathan Stauffer alcohol was his issue. They all kicked hard drugs a long time ago.
Jonathan Stauffer always admirable when people stick to what they believe in instead of giving into peer pressure
