Lamb of God’s Randy Blythe Talks Sobriety and Band’s Journey to a Clean Lifestyle

Lamb of God frontman Randy Blythe recently opened up about the challenges of staying sober while on the road during an appearance on the That Sober Guy podcast. Now 14 years sober, Blythe reflected on his personal struggles and the transformations his bandmates have undergone over the years.

“I’m lucky that in my band, four out of five of us are now no longer drinking. I was the lone ranger for a couple of years. It was tough because I quit, and I’m on this heavy metal bus with these maniacs drinking and doing drugs,” Blythe shared.

The shift within the band started with guitarist Willie Adler, who quit drinking about two years after Blythe. However, Mark Morton’s battle with addiction proved to be an even greater challenge.

“For the first eight years of my sobriety—I’m not talking out of class here, ’cause he just published a book, Desolation—my guitar player Mark got really bad on opiates, heroin. I don’t know how I never got strung out because he and I did a ton together. But alcohol was my thing, and his was opiates. For eight years, I was rolling sober while watching him get worse and worse.”

Blythe recalled the emotional toll of seeing a close friend struggle:

“It was horrible. I’m clean, I’m sober, and I’m thinking, ‘This dude’s gonna die. I’m gonna find him in his bunk dead.’ But I never pushed him, because I didn’t like when people pushed shit on me. I just tried to keep my side of the street clean and be a good example. He’d come talk to me when he wanted, and from time to time, he asked for help.”

Despite his frustration, Blythe recognized that judgment wouldn’t help.

“I’d look at him and think, ‘You’re killing yourself. Why are you doing this?’ But then I had to remind myself—people said the same thing about me for 22 years. Just because I had three years sober didn’t make me the king of sobriety. I had to just be there.”

Eventually, Morton turned things around and has now been sober for six years. More recently, drummer Art Cruz also made the decision to get clean.

“When Art joined the band, he was still partying. He’s been sober for over two years now. So now, four out of the five of us don’t do shit. And it’s nice. It’s great. But for a while, it was just me. Somebody’s gotta put their foot in the pool first.”
