Long-running heavy music institutions Melvins and Napalm Death have joined forces for a new collaborative release titled Savage Imperial Death March, which is set to arrive April 10. Rather than following the familiar split-release model, the project features members from both camps writing and recording material together as a unified lineup.
The album takes its name from the bands’ shared touring history and creative overlap. Representing Melvins on the sessions were Buzz Osborne (vocals/guitar) and Dale Crover, while Mark Greenway, Shane Embury, and John Cooke contributed from the Napalm Death side.
mbury shared his enthusiasm for the collaboration:
“I have loved the Melvins forever and their outlook on music. A chance to make an album of eclectic musical madness with them was truly an honour and a whole lot of fun, which surely is the whole point! Let’s do another one soon.”
Osborne highlighted the balance of the creative partnership:
“Napalm Death are one of my favorite bands ever. It was an absolute pleasure and a dream come true to do this collaboration with them. We wrote songs together. I would write a riff and we would learn it and record it right there. They wrote stuff and we would learn it immediately as well. It was truly a 50/50 partnership.”
Greenway reflected on the long arc that led to the project:
“Funny how life turns out sometimes… collecting hard-to-find Melvins 7-inches on Bleecker Street in 1989 and then touring twice and doing an album with them within the following 35 years. Had a great time with it all, and nice to work with fellow travellers in the Melvins who also couldn’t care about pandering to ‘demographics.’ I felt myself almost babbling lyrically during the recording, and that alone made for very fun recording times.”
A visualizer has been issued for the opening track Tossing Coins Into The Fountain Of Fuck, offering an early preview of the material.

I bought Imperial Death March last summer I think.
Sir Woodrow Doorman classic Melvins stunt, it’s a rerelease of that with 2 bonus songs! I’m so tired of collecting everything Melvins. It hasn’t been worth it for a while.
Ordered. Again 🤭
pffff, for both bands: ‘the show must go on’.
Song blows
