Motionless In White frontman Chris Motionless has revealed that the band’s cover of “Sunglasses At Night” was something he had wanted to record for more than a decade before it finally made its way onto a record.
The track appears on the group’s new album Decades, which also includes a collaboration with Corey Taylor of Slipknot.
Originally performed by Canadian new wave artist Corey Hart, the 1983 hit is reworked by Motionless In White with a heavier industrial metalcore edge while still retaining its synth-driven core.
Speaking in a recent conversation with Craig Reynolds at the Welcome To Rockville festival in Daytona Beach, Florida, Chris Motionless explained the long-running idea behind the cover.
“We did a cover on our new album coming out of the ‘Sunglasses At Night’ song. So this is realistically just my press tour for the cover… I’ve got to play the part.”
He continued by noting that the idea had been circulating for years before it ever became reality.
“I’ve been talking about a cover that I wanna do more than anything in the world for like 12, 13 years now… I feel like Motionless should do ‘Sunglasses At Night’.”
According to Motionless, the band’s version leans heavier than the original but avoids extreme structural changes.
“We brought the guitars and stuff in a little heavier… it’s heavier than the original, but there’s no breakdown or anything.”
He also highlighted the song’s aesthetic appeal and nostalgic 80s sound.
“It’s got all the synths. It’s got the huge hook, the slick ’80s swagger.”
Decades is set for release on July 17th via Roadrunner Records.
