System Of A Down vocalist Serj Tankian has returned with another collaboration, this time teaming up with electronic musician and composer Brendan Angelides for a cover of David Bowie’s “I’m Afraid Of Americans.”
Originally released by David Bowie in 1995, the track has remained one of the legendary artist’s more notable songs from that era. Metal fans may also recognize the song due to the involvement of Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor, who contributed to a remix version of the track.
The new collaboration sees Tankian and Angelides putting their own spin on the Bowie classic, with Angelides explaining that the idea came together unexpectedly while working on his upcoming album.
Angelides stated:
“I always loved Trent Reznor’s remix of Bowie’s original. I’ve been working on a new album for the past year and as this particular beat came together, I unexpectedly started singing those words on top. The first person I thought to collab with was Serj Tankian.”
Angelides also praised Tankian’s influence and revealed that the music video for the collaboration features a unique creative approach built around their childhood photos.
“Serj has been an inspiration to me forever and I’m now lucky to call him a friend. The video is built from our childhood photos. We filmed ourselves to drive the motion capture, then face-tracked, composited, and had a mosh party.”
The track will serve as the next single from Angelides’ upcoming album “Can You Feel The End Begin?”, which is scheduled for release on August 14th.
Angelides explained that the upcoming record explores themes surrounding creativity, communities, and challenging times.
“I keep thinking about what happens to creative communities during authoritarian times. It’s half of what this upcoming album is about.”
The collaboration marks another creative venture for Serj Tankian, who has continued releasing new music and working with artists across different genres outside of his work with System Of A Down.
