System Of A Down frontman Serj Tankian has expanded his creative reach with the launch of a brick-and-mortar location for his coffee brand Kavat Coffee. The shop officially opened its doors in Los Angeles back in July 2024, marking a major step for the project, which originally started in 2018 as a direct-to-consumer online venture.
Inspired by his Armenian heritage and family traditions, Tankian explained the roots of his love for coffee: “The smell would drift through the house, giving a feeling of being home,” he recalled, referencing childhood memories of his mother and grandmother preparing coffee.
Kavat Coffee features single-origin, organic Ethiopian beans and aims to blend culture and community alongside its brews. More than just a café, the space doubles as an artistic sanctuary—housing visual art, music, and rotating exhibits from other creators.
“My whole artistic career has been about introducing our culture,” Tankian said, underscoring the shop’s mission to be a cultural hub as much as a coffee destination.
