As Slipknot look ahead to their 25th anniversary celebrations in 2025, guitarist Jim Root has opened up about the band’s future and his desire to return to the raw intensity of their early days.
Appearing on the ‘Turning Wrenches Podcast’, Root revealed he’s already sitting on six complete arrangements for new Slipknot material—ideas that have yet to be shared with the rest of the band.
“I’ve got like six finished arrangements that so far nobody else has heard yet,” he said. “They’re about ready to go to Clown and Corey and then filter out into the rest of the band… I would like to do 1, 2 maybe even 3 [singles] in the meantime.”
He continued: “You always want to have way more material than what you’re gonna need… There’s always that one weird song that you don’t think is great, and then all of a sudden that turns into the song that’s like, ‘Woah, where did this come from? This thing’s a banger.’”
He pointed to “Devil In I” as one of those unexpected successes.
As for Slipknot’s next studio full-length—their 8th—Root said he’s hoping to capture the stripped-down, aggressive energy that fueled their classic records like ‘Iowa’ and ‘Volume 3: The Subliminal Verses’.
“I want to make a raw album… There’s just something really stripped down and punk rock about [those early records] and I think we’ve been missing that on our past few records.”
While the band previously teased a track titled “Long May You Die”, there was no update on that material during this latest interview. However, Root did confirm that a 25th anniversary reissue of their 1999 self-titled debut is in the works. “I don’t have any news as to when it’s happening, but it is happening,” he stated.
