Don’t Expect New SLIPKNOT Music Anytime Soon, Despite Previous Teases

Despite growing speculation and teases of new material, it looks like Slipknot fans may be waiting a while before hearing a new record from the masked metal legends.

Last year, the band revealed that a track titled “Long May You Die” was seemingly on the verge of release. The announcement came shortly after they brought in powerhouse drummer Eloy Casagrande (ex-Sepultura), sparking hopes that fresh music was imminent. But over a year later, the song remains unreleased and there’s no sign of a larger project on the immediate horizon.

Back in summer 2023, founding member and percussionist M. Shawn “Clown” Crahan hyped up the band’s next chapter in an interview with Revolver, stating:

“Well, one thing I can say is this: There’s always going to be new Slipknot music. But we’ve also said that there is a filter, and we are the filter, and that filter must go through everyone. And when I was telling you that we’re doing a lot better communicating, now apply that to communicating about music.

I can say that there’s gonna be music sooner than you can imagine, delivered to you in a way you can’t imagine. And I’m excited because we’re not on a label. And there’s a lot of dismay with that, you know what I mean? But there’s also a lot of middle fingers with that. I love it, you know? Come and get us, or we’ll come to get you!”

Given that level of excitement, many fans assumed new music would follow shortly. But based on a newly published interview with guitarist Jim Root, originally conducted in December 2023, the situation may be more complicated than it seemed.

Speaking with Guitar Interactive, Root explained:

“Not diligently. Honestly, we’ve been touring so much since [drummer] Eloy [Casagrande] joined the band that my inspiration is nearly zero. And there’s a bunch of music that was written during COVID that I’m not interested in. And I think everybody else in the band gets it too, and I think they’re kind of, like, ‘Okay, we need to just kind of, like, maybe sweep all that shit under a rug and start fresh.’

And I wanna get touring behind us. I wanna have at least a month off just to shut my brain off and sleep and all that kind of stuff. And then when I find myself going out to my little home studio and putting riffs together, then I’ll know it’s time to start.”

While some time has passed since that interview, Slipknot stayed on the road for much of 2024, marking the 25th anniversary of their self-titled double platinum album. Their busy schedule included headlining Knotfest Australia this past February and March, wrapping that run on March 11th.

With more dates lined up for June and beyond, and Root dismissing much of the unreleased COVID-era material, it’s clear that a focused studio effort isn’t quite in motion yet.
