Seven years have passed since Tool released their long-awaited fifth album, Fear Inoculum, but bassist Justin Chancellor says the band is still actively developing new material—just without any deadlines attached. Despite momentum following that 2019 release, the group’s famously meticulous creative process remains unchanged.
In a newly published interview with The Australian, Chancellor confirmed that writing sessions remain ongoing but emphasized that the band refuses to force their creative evolution:
“We’re working on new music. I don’t know when we’re going to finish it… Art doesn’t really have a schedule, you know what I mean? Like, you can’t force it. And if you do, it tends not to work out so great.”
He described the band’s workflow as a slow-burn alchemy shaped by each member’s outside pursuits:
“Maynard’s got his side projects, Danny does a bunch of different stuff, Adam does different sh*t, and I’ve got my stuff… It gives us a little headroom that speaks to the new stuff when we come back together.”
Chancellor also pushed back on the long-running joke that Tool takes “13 years” between albums:
“Everyone’s always taking a piss like it takes so long… But I’m proud of everything we’ve done. They always talk about 13 years. It seems like a week to me… If you do anything that’s decent, even if it’s one thing, it’s worth it.”
When asked whether fan impatience could be viewed as a compliment, he agreed—but reiterated that quality comes before pace:
“We just don’t want it to be on a schedule. We want it to be good. We want to be proud of it… The formula is just to carry on living life and exploring and letting it come in through your life experiences.”
The band recently surprised fans by switching up their setlists on their New Zealand stop and will remain on the road through the end of the year.
