Enjoy Wrestling co-owner Kurt Hackimer has shared additional details surrounding the death of Andy Williams, the former Every Time I Die guitarist who also became known to wrestling fans as The Butcher.
Williams died on Saturday, September 5, following a medical emergency at an Enjoy Wrestling event in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The musician and professional wrestler had just competed in a tag team match when he collapsed at ringside.
According to Hackimer, Williams was immediately taken to the side of the venue, where the promotion’s two on-site doctors began treating him.
“Andy collapsed at ringside after his match on Saturday and hit his head on the floor. We carried him to the side where he was attended to by the two doctors we have on staff.”
Hackimer said Williams was conscious when an ambulance was initially called, but he was unresponsive and his condition quickly deteriorated.
“I called for an ambulance. At this time, he was conscious but unresponsive. His condition worsened quickly and his pulse faded. Called 911 again to provide an update and were informed that the police were about to arrive.”
The event was subsequently stopped as medical personnel continued efforts to save Williams.
“We ended the event and asked the audience to leave. Doctors administered CPR and utilized an AED provided by the police until the ambulance arrived.”
Williams was transported to Allegheny General Hospital at approximately 9:45 p.m. Hackimer said the promotion learned of his passing shortly after midnight from Williams’ tag team partner, Jesse Guilleman.
“He was taken to Allegheny General Hospital at around 9:45PM and we were informed of his passing by his tag team partner, Jesse Guilleman, shortly after midnight.”
While medics indicated that Williams’ symptoms were consistent with a cardiac event, Hackimer noted that the official cause of death had not yet been established.
“Medics on site indicated that the symptoms were consistent with a cardiac event, but we were told that the cause of death is pending the results of an autopsy.”
Williams’ death has sent shockwaves through the heavy music community. Before becoming a professional wrestler, Williams was best known as the guitarist of Every Time I Die, helping define the band’s chaotic blend of metalcore, hardcore, and Southern rock throughout its career.
He later established himself as The Butcher in professional wrestling, performing for AEW alongside The Blade before continuing to work throughout the independent scene.
Williams’ final days were also spent actively pursuing both of his passions. His latest musical project, Atomic Rule, had been working on new material, while he continued making appearances in the wrestling world.
Tributes from musicians and wrestlers alike have poured in since his death, reflecting the unusual but highly influential career Williams built across both scenes.
Williams was 48 years old.
