Beartooth frontman Caleb Shomo appears to have deleted his official Instagram account following online controversy surrounding the band’s recently released single “Free.”
While no official statement has been issued explaining the account’s removal, the timing follows widespread online discourse tied to Shomo’s dramatic visual transformation in the music video for the track, which debuted last week. Since its release, Shomo has reportedly been targeted with homophobic slurs across social media platforms, with some of the harassment allegedly extending to his wife’s accounts as well.
The single marks Beartooth’s first release since signing with Fearless Records, and Shomo previously described the song as a deeply personal turning point for both his music and his life.
“‘Free’ is the start of the next chapter of my music and my life. The emotional roller coaster that is living can be very complicated at times. In one day you can equally experience pure fear and pure joy. This song shows a glimpse of what is to come from the next Beartooth album, which is the most honest depiction of my soul I will most likely ever make.”
Amid the situation, Attila vocalist Chris Fronzak drew attention online after posting a series of comments on X (formerly Twitter) shortly after Shomo’s Instagram disappearance. One post read:
“Looks like Caleb Shomo dropped the ‘S.’”
Fronzak later repeated the remark and clarified that the comment was intended as a joke, though the posts quickly sparked divided reactions among fans.
As discussion continued, Fronzak responded to criticism by defending his intent and expanding on broader views about the modern music industry, claiming artists are often pressured to conform to certain narratives by labels and industry expectations.
Additional posts from Fronzak suggested that authenticity ultimately determines long-term success, while also arguing that major-label involvement can influence an artist’s public image and direction.
Neither Shomo nor representatives for Beartooth have publicly addressed the situation as of press time.
