Yesterday’s (May 19th) closing show of the annual ‘Sonic Temple Art + Music Festival‘ in Columbus, OH was packed with unexpected collaborations and nostalgic nods. Limp Bizkit took the stage as the penultimate act, but their performance was more than just a routine set.
During their energetic set, Limp Bizkit surprised fans by inviting Slipknot‘s Sid Wilson to join forces with DJ Lethal for some electrifying turntable teamwork, using Limp Bizkit‘s track “Turn It Up, Bitch” as the backdrop. This collaboration injected an extra dose of energy into the festival’s atmosphere.
But the surprises didn’t stop there. Fred Durst, Limp Bizkit‘s frontman, took another trip down memory lane by inviting a fan dressed as Slipknot‘s Corey Taylor to join them on stage for “Full Nelson.” This unexpected guest appearance added a touch of nostalgia to the performance, delighting fans and showcasing the camaraderie between these iconic bands.
However, Limp Bizkit‘s set wasn’t just about musical collaborations. It also brought to light a piece of music history involving another band on the festival lineup, Taproot. Back in the early days of their career, Taproot caught the attention of Fred Durst, who was then a prominent figure in the music industry. Durst saw potential in Taproot and worked to secure them a record deal with the Flip/Interscope label family, which housed Limp Bizkit at the time.
Taproot‘s drummer, Jarrod Montague, detailed this chapter in his book ‘True Rockstars: 12 Guiding Principles For Success And Happiness.’ Despite Durst‘s efforts to propel Taproot into the spotlight, their partnership soured over the terms of a production deal. Taproot ultimately chose a different path, aligning themselves with Atlantic Records. This decision didn’t sit well with Durst, who left a fiery message Taproot‘s frontman’s answering machine, expressing his disappointment and issuing warnings.
Fast forward to the present day, and the tension between Limp Bizkit and Taproot seems to have mellowed. Stephen Richards, Taproot‘s vocalist, was spotted at Limp Bizkit‘s Sonic Temple performance, capturing a moment that hinted at a reconciliation between the two parties. Despite their past differences, the shared history between Limp Bizkit and Taproot adds an intriguing layer to the festival’s dynamic, showcasing the interconnectedness of the music industry.
