Slipknot, the masked multi-platinum alternative metal band, has kicked off their highly anticipated new tour. For devoted fans, known as maggots, this signifies more than just concerts – it’s a chance to witness the unveiling of new masks, outfits, and all the theatrics the band is famous for. However, 2024 holds special significance as it marks the 25th anniversary of their self-titled 1999 album, a pivotal moment that propelled them to fame.
This year, in addition to commemorating their milestone album, Slipknot introduces a new member on drums, following the departure of Jay Weinberg last November. Speculation has been rife that Eloy Casagrande, former drummer of Sepultura, has taken over the position after his abrupt exit from the Brazilian metal band earlier this year.
The band’s return to the stage commenced with an intimate performance at Pappy + Harriet’s in Pioneertown, CA, on April 25th that found the band wearing an assortment of updated throwback masks and their retro red jumpsuits. Despite the venue’s modest capacity of 850, it was reportedly filled to the brim, setting the stage for their larger appearance at the ‘Sick New World‘ festival on April 27th. This show not only served as a warm-up for their festival performance but also harked back to their early days, before the massive success of their debut album propelled them past their opening act status. During the show, Corey Taylor said to the crowd:
“Tonight, it doesn’t matter you came from. It doesn’t matter when you were born. This year is 19 fucking’ 99, right here. We’re gonna play you some songs from beyond that year. But God damnit, it all started in ’99, and it is starting again here tonight.”
